POST-ACUTE REHABILITATION

Forest Manor Health and Rehab’s 40-bed, post-acute rehabilitation facility is designed as a luxury addition to the existing Forest Manor Nursing Home, located in Northport, Alabama. Our progressive design constitutes a bold, but necessary, departure from the semiprivate institutional feeling that characterized its predecessor. Recognizing the need for independence, and the high expectations of the aging Baby Boomer generation, our facility was developed to re-create the atmosphere is a resort facility. Its aesthetic presentation uses heavy textured floral wall coverings with wall sconces and other features common to the elite resorts that this generation associates with the luxury vacation experience. The plush and richly detailed furnishings were selected in keeping with this concept of an environment that exudes prestige and elegance, and yet does not overlook the practical needs. Each suite has a private living room, separate bedroom, kitchenette, and handicapped-accessible bathroom featuring a roll-in shower.

Forest Manor Rehabilitation Pavilion is designed to provide an uplifting environment to enhance the psychological needs that accompany the recovery process. We paid careful attention to provide the patient with privacy as well as opportunities for social interaction. Intimate interior landscape gardens were created to separate the interior-facing patient suites. A future phase will include a solar-protected translucent canopy structure partially enclosing luscious gardens and bubbling fountains. Environments that invite social connection and contact with the natural world have proven to be especially helpful in maintaining the patient’s mental orientation to time and space during the recovery process, particularly for those experiencing stressful complications.

Technological enhancements, such as Wireless Internet Services, will reinforce the impression of amenity-rich resort living and enable patients to maintain their vital connection to friends, family, and the outside world, including private telephones in each suite. Wireless Internet is available to all 40 suites as well as a wireless nurse call system using digital pagers to enhance the responsiveness of caregivers and staff members. We strategically positioned the Nurses’ Observation areas for maximum visibility of patient corridors. The two nurses’ stations protrude into the main corridor areas allowing better visual control. All clinical and staff support areas between these two stations are shared, thus eliminating the need for unnecessary duplication.
